Doctors' Health South Australia
We are a fully independent, profession-controlled organisation dedicated to improving the health of South Australian doctors and medical students. The Board of Directors and staff share the vision of a healthier medical profession for the benefit of the whole community.
This health program is for doctors and medical students only and aims to assist them to find a doctor of choice. It offers a number of professional and confidential pathways of care to achieve this.
There are a significant number of barriers which make it particularly difficult for some medical professionals to access health care in the current system. Doctors’ Health SA is aware of doctors who inappropriately self-treat and avoid formal medical care for a range of reasons and may therefore present quite late in an illness. Such doctors would greatly benefit from the timely advice of an independent caring doctor.
Doctors’ Health SA has developed special solutions to reduce these barriers and thereby support and encourage all doctors to have their own doctor.
The medical profession recognises the importance of healthy doctors to the community and the long-term advantages of establishing good self-care practices as early as possible in a medical career. We aim to avoid doctors progressing from wellness to illness and on to impairment, simply because they have been unable to obtain formal help and medical assistance.
This unique program has been created through broad input from the profession which has been willing to contribute to and support it. It is voluntary, profession-controlled and emphasises prevention and a choice of ways for doctors and medical students to seek help so that they can continue to enjoy personal and professional longevity and practise better medicine for the benefit of the whole community.
